Research: Lamina Cribrosa Cell Culture

I completed my research internship at the Soft Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory (STBL) at the University of Pittsburgh.

Currently glaucoma can be treated with medicine or surgery, but there is no cure. My specific research focused on using an intravital incubation system to culture cells from a region in the eye that is often damaged in glaucoma patients.

Some of the tasks that I completed include:

• porcine eyeball extraction and dissection (first image on this page)

• fluorescent labelling (second image on this page)

• fluorescent, 2-Photon, and bright field imaging

• general cell culture and cell counting

• setup and operation of intravital incubation system

As a general lab member, I also helped out with other projects via tasks that involved:

• decellularizing ocular tissue

• testing various hydrogels

• slicing specimens and fixing onto slides

• histology
